The current construction industry can be seen as a harmful human activity for the plant. Our mission is to create a better world where human and nature can coexist harmoniously, through careful considerations on material, construction, conservation, and community.
The practice’s sensitivity comes from its in-depth knowledge of working with historic buildings. Working in these settings, Hayatsu Architects have developed a unique insight into creating innovative and exciting spaces that are seamlessly integrated within their historic context through carefully crafted material interventions and the adaptation of hands-on construction methods.
The practice’s current portfolio ranges from designing houses for private clients, exhibitions and installations for arts institutions, and civic buildings and spaces for local authorities.

I’ve worked with Takeshi on a variety projects at the South London Gallery over the past decade, ranging from our award-winning extension designed by 6a which opened to the public in 2010, through to modifications to existing spaces to create meeting and reception rooms and, most recently, designing the renovation of the grade II listed former Fire Station on Peckham Road to create an annexe to our main site.

The Blue had been the heart of local community for over a century. The closure of the local docks and factories in the 1970’s, brought decades of economic decline, negatively affecting the area and the Blue Market, which had dwindled to a handful of stalls.
In 2019 a community campaign led by Blue Bermondsey BID secured GLA funding for regeneration, with the focus on the Market Place. Hayatsu Architects developed an innate understanding of requirements by working ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with the community partners to create a unique and inviting hub, that is the foundation for the Blue’s revival.
