St Anne’s Close

2022

St Anne’s Close is a small hamlet near Highgate in north London. It was developed by renowned architect Walter Segal in 1952, as a private housing coop for himself and friends. It is a set of simple and elegant post-war brick family homes, comprising of two detached and six semi-detached two-story houses, arranged around a central communal courtyard tucked behind a churchyard.

Segal arranged the houses on stepped terraces facing south, retaining the almost as found condition of tennis courts before the development. After 80 years of maturity the Close is now surrounded by lush and rich foliage and trees, creating a sanctuary for a tightly knit community.

Our interventions are strictly following the Close’s conservation management plan. It stipulates the volume and orientation of the extension to be integrated within the rich existing garden setting.
